Writing

On Thursdays, we have our writing meetings. Sometimes they’re long, sometimes they’re short, sometimes they don’t happen at all.
But now that we’re heading into the Fall, it’s pretty important for us to write constantly… both on our own, and together.
We’ve found that, for us, the best way to write as a team, united under a goal, is to actually spend a lot of time writing alone. Some of our best ideas come when one of us sends a melody to the group via e-mail, or shoots over some lyrics they’re mulling over… From there, on our own, we each spend time working through ideas, trying different angles on each others songs.
Then, when we meet in a group, we aren’t just sitting in a circle, staring at each other, trying to start from scratch. All of our ideas, no matter who brings them in, are open for suggestions and change.
In the last two years, we’ve gotten a lot better at keeping all of our ideas open for change. We want to build on a culture that believes we’re better working on something together, than finishing something alone.
